Who Was Barnabas?
Barnabas, born Joseph, was an early Christian and one of the prominent apostles in Jerusalem.
The name Barnabas means “Son of Encouragement.”
He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. Barnabas put the kingdom ahead of his possessions. His first recorded act is that he sold a field he owned and laid the proceeds at the apostles’ feet- Acts 4:37.
After Paul’s conversion, Barnabas courageously vouched for him when the Jerusalem church was suspicious that a former persecutor would want to join them- Acts 9:26-31. Acts 11:22-24 capsulizes the man, Barnabas: “When the church at Jerusalem heard what had happened, they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw this evidence of God’s blessing, he was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord.”
